If so, how was it? Dangerous? Do you need a big, tough 4x4 of sorts to handle the terrain? Or is it just a normal road you can take whatever on (besides during the winter, obviously).

My brother did it about 25 years ago-from Chicago to Anchorage .
He did it i n a 1985 Honda Prelude, which he bought a few months earlier with 175k on it. Other than an alternator failing near Whitehorse which kept him stuck there for 5 days waiting on a replacement, he had a great trip.
Parts of it were unpaved gravel (at least back then) so the danger of broken windshields is very real with all of the truck traffic.

Had a family friend drive it in an 80s Scirocco soo...
I’m sure it’s not the easiest thing on any vehicle but It’s not impassible four wheeling and rock crawling.

I did the Alcan Highway in 1999 now things may have changed, but it was mostly paved all the way some gravel bits. Services are few and far between have plenty of tools spare parts and about 200 miles of gas with you.
Big tough 4x4 not necessary but all wheel drive and all terrain tires I would consider mandatory,
Think of it as 2000 mile long rally stage with few pit stops and no crew.
That said best month long vacation of my life. Wish circumstances would make it possible to do it again.
Oh you will need a new windshield when done, your paint will be chipped lights will be cracked. But again it was worth it.

I know a guy who towed a 40 ft. trailer across canada on that highway with a Ford Festiva. I think you will be ok.

Just did it from Minnesota to Anchorage 2 years ago in October. Co driver for my older sister who lives in Anchorage. We did it in a 2012 Subaru Outback. Zero problems at all. I don't remember anything at all about it being rough at all. Smooth sailing the whole way.

Towing anything with a Ford Festiva - how slow was he going?!

I guess he did pretty good speed wise. Similar to other traffic.
